Historical Site 6: The De-ching Riverway

The De-ching River, also called "Kang-ah-deh," was originated in the old Tainan Plateau and ran through downtown Tainan. The river has now disappeared after large-scale reconstruction due to urban planning. The length of the river was approximately 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) and had been one of the most important rivers in the past 400 years of Taiwan history. On April 29, 1661, Zheng Chenggong's fleet landed at Heliau Port alongside the De-ching River. Five later, the fleet conquered Fort Zeelandia established by the Dutch. The river originated near today's National Cheng Kung University and National Tainan First Senior High School, streamed through today's Mintzu Rd. and National Tainan Junior College of Nursing, and went into Taijiang near today's Liren Elementary School. The ruins of the river levee can be seen from the north of National Tainan First Senior High School. The geography in the south of National Cheng Kung University is also a legacy of the old De-ching River.
