Amitabha Temple

Constructed during the Dutch Colonial Era (1647-1661), the Amitabha Temple has been one of the four renowned temples in Fucheng. It is now located at No. 133, Dongmen Rd. Sec.1. In 1858, shop owners and believers donated a giant bell to the temple, which was damaged in an airstrike during World War II. The Japanese army later confiscated the bell, intending to melt it for the production of weapons. Fortunately, the Japanese surrendered before the action was carried out, and the bell was purchased by an antique merchant and given back to the temple. The style of Amitabha Temple pays tribute to the palaces in the Tang Dynasty. On both sides of its grand Sanman stands a Protector Buddha, the Heng and Ha Generals. Their solemn expressions and heavy armors draw visitors' attention and respect. At the center of the courtyard stands a lush banyan tree, beside which are Bohdi trees and gardens. Though the temple has gone through several times of refurbishment, its archaic elegance remains.
