Old Tainan Magistrate Residence

Established in 1900, the Old Tainan Magistrate Residence located at No.1, Weiming St. has been dubbed "The Clock Tower" by senior citizens in Tainan. The residence once served as the only stopover place for the Japanese Royalty in southern Taiwan. By 1941, more than twenty Japanese royalties had visited the place, including Prince Hirohito, who visited in 1923. A new wooden room and two tennis courts were constructed on the left of the residence for this visit, and a air-raid shelter in the rear. In the postwar era, several government sectors had moved into the residence. In 2002, the Tainan City Government delegated the Department of Architecture, National Cheng Kung University to repair and recover the residence to its current appearance.
