Great East Gate

Constructed originally as a wooden-fenced gate in the Yongzhen reign, Qing Dynasty, the Great East Gate is now one of the municipal historical sites of Tainan City. The gate was reconstructed with mud and stones in the Qianlong reign, and another floor was added on top of the original building. The gate is located inside the Shengli-Dongmen Roundabout, which has served as a crucial driveway in the city. An inscription of “Yingchunmen” (迎春門) can be found on the west side of the gate. During the Qing Dynasty, a spring-welcoming (yingchun) ceremony would be held outside the Great East Gate. Though the tradition was disrupted during Japanese occupation of Taiwan, it is now revived by the Tainan City Government as a retro carnival, demonstrating the cultural value of the spring-welcoming tradition.
