Definition
The ¡§East District¡¨ was transformed from Jhuwei and Dongmen in the Japanese Colonial Period. In 1946, Anshunjhuang (and the district known as ¡§Annan¡¨ now) were included in this City and, therefore, this District headed toward the south east side of Tainan City but still adopted the original name ¡§East District¡¨. In the early days after Taiwan was restored, most of this District was full of farms, and then National Cheng Kung University was founded, Jhugaocuo and Huweiliao were divided as the industrial park, and the 4th readjusted region occupied an area of 304 hectares as developed in Jhugaocuo in 1977. Accordingly, East District became an idealistic cultural and educational residential district because it was equipped with well-founded facilities and a drastic increase in population. In 1981, the District governed 42 villages in total. In May 1994, Chongshan Village was divided into Chongshan and Chongcheng, Dajhih Village divided into Dajhih and Dongjhih, and Guansheng Village divided into Guansheng and Dongsheng. Upon the adjustment on February 4, 2002, the District governed 45 villages in total covering 1,207 neighborhoods. Upon the readjustment on January 9, 2006, Guansheng Village was divided into Guansheng, Wensheng and Nansheng. For the time being, the District governs 47 villages in total covering 1,279 neighborhoods. *
